The Newport Beach Historical Society celebrated our 1-Year Museum Anniversary in true tiki spirit with a special screening of The Donn of Tiki at the historic Lido Theater. The film captivated the audience with its stunning storytelling, creative animation, and archival treasures, while the post-screening Q&A with the filmmakers made the night even more memorable.

We are deeply grateful to California State Assembly Member Diane Dixon for joining us and presenting a wonderful recognition of our anniversary, and to Newport Beach City Council Member Robyn Grant for her thoughtful words on the importance of preserving our city’s history and her commitment to strengthening the partnership between the City and our Society. Our sincere thanks also go to the filmmakers for sharing their incredible work and insights, to our dedicated Board of Directors whose tireless efforts brought this evening to life, and to our consultant at 70 Degrees whose leadership and vision helped make the event a true success.

The evening kicked off with powerful opening remarks from Mayor Joe Stapleton and Councilmember Robyn Grant, celebrating the importance of honoring Newport Beach’s rich history.

Guests enjoyed a great dinner, fun drawings, and an incredible presentation by Bill Lobdell, who brought the story of W.S. Collins and Balboa Island to life with his signature storytelling charm.

The energy was high, the room was packed, and the love for our city’s past was felt by all. Thank you to everyone who joined us, we can’t wait for the next one!

Established in 1911 with a modest hose reel and a team of twelve volunteers, the department transitioned to a fully paid organization in 1927, reflecting the city's growth and the increasing need for professional fire services.

Today, NBFD operates eight fire stations across the city, equipped with modern apparatus and staffed by highly trained personnel. Their commitment to protecting life and property remains unwavering, as demonstrated by their recent deployment to assist in combating the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles County.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the brave men and women of NBFD for their selfless service during this crisis. Their courage and professionalism exemplify the spirit of our community, and we are proud to support them as they aid our neighbors in need.

🎄✨ Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade: A Century of Holiday Magic! ✨🎄

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade has enchanted visitors since the early 1900s! It all began in 1907 when Italian gondolier John Scarpa decorated a gondola with Japanese lanterns for an evening ride. By 1908, the first Tournament of Lights took place, featuring nine illuminated vessels led by Scarpa’s gondola.

Over the decades, this beloved tradition evolved. Despite pauses during World War I and the Great Depression, Joseph Beek—developer of the Balboa Ferry Line—revived the event in 1919. By the 1940s, the addition of a floating Christmas tree and carolers turned the Tournament of Lights into the holiday celebration we know today.

🌟 Today’s Parade
Now hosted by the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, the parade features up to 100 lighted boats and has been hailed as “one of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation” by The New York Times. It remains a cornerstone of the Southern California holiday season.

On September 10, 1870, Captain Samuel Dunnells steered the sternwheel steamer Vaquero into Newport Bay, marking the beginning of commerce in the area. This pivotal moment led James Irvine and the McFadden brothers to designate the "Old Landing" (now Lower Castaways) as "Newport." From 1870 to 1889, the McFaddens' shipping port thrived, with their steam schooner Newport exchanging lumber and merchandise for local farm produce. The two-story house in the foreground, built for Robert McFadden and later occupied by the harbor pilot, along with other cottages for longshoremen and fishermen, witnessed the bustling early days of Newport Beach. The photo, looking southerly toward the harbor entrance across what is now Promontory and Beacon Bays and Balboa Island, captures the essence of an era with warehouses, horse-drawn wagons, and stacks of logs along the shore. You won’t find Echo Beach on any map, but back in the 80’s, a gang of surfers from Newport Beach nicknamed the stretch between 52nd and 56th. You can catch more of this history in Jamie Brisick’s book, “The Eighties at Echo Beach,” a visual collection of the times with photography from Mike Moir.

Sometimes the back of the post card contains more interest than the front. This was written by a Basin Marine employee named Coral, and she describes working in the yacht basin area and, more specifically, at the marine hardware shop.

Coral also writes about the cost of various things including the garages, 50 of them, that rent for $12.00 a month, the apartments that rent for $100 - $150 a month, the Basin Marine Ship Yard where you can rent slips for $1.00 per foot of your boat length. Coral goes on to say that she is "happy with her position and her surroundings."

To the right of the card you can spot the Galley Cafe, the Marine Hardware store where Coral worked, and the garages along the back. There are more slips now than before but much of it is the same.
